Medical Marijuana for our Veterans

Setting a landmark precedent, the US Senate FY2016 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs (MilCon-VA) Appropriations Bill was including language approving VA doctors to recommend medical marijuana in states where its legal.
As a veteran, I’ve experienced the closed-doors approach to marijuana that the VA has taken so far. It looks a lot like this: Narcotics and prescription pills with an essay-long list of side effects are freely considered, discussed and – without fail- prescribed. When it has come to any semblance of a conversation about medical-marijuana: End of story. Left… Right… Left-Right!

President Obama and other representatives for the people speak their belief in science as our guiding light for marijuana legalization. Studies have shown that medical marijuana can help treat post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury, illnesses typically suffered by veterans. A 2014 study of people with PTSD showed a greater than 75% reduction in severity of symptoms when patients were using marijuana to treat their illness, compared to when they were not.[/fusion_text][/fusion_builder_column][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][fusion_text]Clearly, our representatives are listening to the science At last, with this momentous approval, veterans can breathe a long-held sigh of relief — relief in the form of amending one piece of a larger bill sponsored by Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Rand Paul (R-KY), and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY). The Compassionate Access, Research Expansion and Respect States (CARERS) Act was introduced to the Senate floor earlier this year before summer recess.[/fusion_text][fusion_text]“The politics around marijuana have shifted in recent years, yet Judiciary Chairman Chuck Grassley hasn’t held a hearing on the bill,” said Bill Piper, director of national affairs for the Drug Policy Alliance. “We will move the CARERS Act piece by piece if we have to but now is the time for the Senate to hold a hearing on the bill as a whole.”

For decades, veterans have voiced their belief in marijuana. Today, that voice was validated with one small step towards Mission: Marijuana Treatment. Step after step, left in front of right, this truck has started moving on a national level.

From my time in the Cavalry Scouts, we learned trucks have one rule…

…this truck don’t stop.
